Cupola View - Octagon Barn Center Project Updates and News

San Luis Obispo Octagon Barn Center Update, Winter 2012.

There has been considerable progress over the last several months and some very good news:

--

  • The project got unanimous approval at the Airport Land Use Commission today.   Because we are in a flight path, our project had to get scrutinized by this Commission, and came out without issues to work.

  • The OBC has a fence!  The outline of our lease parcels is now covered with a fence.   This gives visitors a good idea about the extent of the property that will be part of the Center, and fulfills a commitment to Caltrans as part of our lease arrangement with them.

  • Octagaon Barn during the Tank Farm Fire of 1928

  • There’s a new sign out front.   This is includes a colorful notional rendering of the site, and acknowledges our primary partners (County Parks  and Caltrans) and sponsors (Utility Telephone, Westland Engineering, Bert and Candace Forbes)    Please see the photo.  We left some room for some more sponsors!

  • The City of San Luis Obispo has been awarded an “Octagon Barn to LOVR Caltrans transportation planning grant”.    This will fund a study on how to connect the Octagon Barn to the City’s bike trails, adding to the intended trail from the Barn to Avila Beach.

  • The Land Conservancy commissioned work on construction documents for the renovation of the Milking Parlor, with architects Jim Duffy and Joel Snyder.   Our goal is to be able to work on the Milking Parlor in 2012, while the other grading and landscaping work is going on at the site.   Plus we’ve started conceptual work on a Storage Shed, which is needed to avoid storage inside the Barn.

.

Water at Octagon Barn-- We had a terrific Barn lighting ceremony on the 2nd (our fourth annual one).  We honored Utility Telephone for their incredible donation; Mark Jordan, representing UT, got to push the button.   We were also honored by the attendance of Supervisor Adam Hill, who has followed our progress closely.   Please see enclosures..

-- We have a firm date for the Planning Commission to hear our Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application:  January 26 (now February 23, as noted above).   We will be asking some of you for letters of support.   With a positive outcome (and conditions) we will be able to move forward on detailed discussions with County Parks regarding grading the site, bathrooms, and a turn lane.   Our work to get to this critical stage, complete with a long list of studies, was sponsored by the Bert and Candace Forbes Family Foundation.

-- Construction documents on refurbishing the Milking Parlor should be completed in the next several weeks.   This will set the stage for discussions regarding funding the critical structure/roof/floor improvements.   We’ve had terrific support from Joel Snyder and Jim Duffy, architects, for this..

-- We’re grateful for all of the support and interest in this project.  Thank you!
